On January 11th at the Winona Infirmary, the life of Mrs. Alice Mitchell Boyd came to an end after an illness of several months. The last rites were said on Sunday afternoon, January 12th, at 2 o'clock, from the home of her sister, Mrs. Trigg Thomas, with the Rev. C.L. Rogers, Rev. R. S. Lowe, Rev. Ben Jaco and Rev. C. H. Hamlett III conducting the services which were concluded with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
Two daughters survive, Mrs. Philip Williams of Brownsville, Tenn. and Miss Alweyda Boyd of Winona; one granddaughter, Phyllis Boyd Williams; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Applewhite and Mrs. Trigg Thomas of this city; and one brother, J. Hendrix Mitchell of Jackson.
Mrs. Boyd was born in Corinth, Miss., on July 7th, 1888, the daughter of the Rev. J. H. Mitchell and Viola Cawthorn Mitchell. Her father being a Methodist minister and presiding elder, she lived at various towns in the districts he served, four years being spent in Winona . She received her education at various schools of Mississippi and graduated from Grenada College.
While her father was serving as presiding elder of the Corinth district, she was married from his home to Grover C. Boyd of McComb City, Miss. In 1934, Mr. Boyd's death occurred while living In Memphis, following which Mrs. Boyd made her home with her sister, Mrs. Trigg Thomas in Winona, where her culture, charm and gracious personality, made her universally beloved.
Possessing a lovely voice and gifted in dramatic art as well, she was always a leader in music circles and for many years sang in the choirs of the churches in her father's district. Up until her final illness, she took an active part in the Methodist church and its organizations and the Woman's club of Winona.
