1. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-one in Lancaster October 3, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 19 as a private with Co. F, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pennsylvania). He was discharged by surgeon's certificate June 6, 1862, at Bowling Green, Kentucky, for "rheumatism brought on by exposure on the march." Both the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file and his compiled military service records spell his surname "Spang."
2. Federally drafted in Lancaster County and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia July 15, 1863, as a private with Co. F, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry. He is not found in the company register but has compiled military service records. He transferred to the 12th Company, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps, and also served with Co. E, 3rd Veteran Reserve Corps. He honorably discharged to date August 1, 1865. Various service records identify him as "Leonard Spong," "Phillip Spang,"and "Phillip Spong."
He died at his son William's home from "chronic interstitial nephritis."
