2nd President of Lithuania. He served from June 19, 1920 to June 7, 1926. Prior to becoming president, he wanted to be a priest. Instead, he attended the the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in University of Halle in Germany. Graduating in 1913, he published several articles on agronomy, and in 1918 he started to publish journals "Farmer" and "Farmer's Calendar". He was one of the founders of the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party. He was one of co-organizers of the Vilnius National Conference to gain independence from the Russian Empire. He was then elected to the Council of Lithuania. On 16 February 1918 he signed the Act of Independence of Lithuania. He was in charge of organizing the national army to defend the country against the aggression of the Russians. From May 1920 to 1922 he was Speaker of the Constituent Assembly of Lithuania and therefore acting president of the republic. He then became president. He left politics and returned to farming. He was arrested in 1941 and deported to Russia. In 1952 he was sentenced to prison but was released in 1956. He is best remembered for his independence efforts and as one the last of the signatories of the Act of Independence of Lithuania.
