Bonnie Smith Cornelius, age 87, of Oneonta, changed her earthly address from Oneonta to her Heavenly Home on Monday, July 27, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 1, 1933 to the late Ben H. Smith and Genoma Shelton Smith in Snead, Alabama. Bonnie married the love of her life, Ernest Cornelius on December 25, 1954. She and Ernest where married so long that they became one as it is written in the Bible; you never saw one without the other. They raised three wonderful daughters that followed in mother’s footsteps to become nurses also, and she made a special life as a woman in the medical field. She began her career as an LPN in 1950 and then later upgraded her degree to a Registered Nurse in 1973. She was a lifelong, dedicated nurse for almost 50 years that took care of many men and women of Blount County. Bonnie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oneonta for 45 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Genoma Smith; brothers, Colbert, Cecil (Opal), Curt (Mary Ann), and Benny (Sewilla) Smith; sisters, Mildred (James) Stephens, Betty (Clyde) Horsley and Barbara (Don) Miller. She is survived by her husband, Ernest Cornelius; daughters, Carol (Randy) Faust, Donna Burt and Linda (Mike) Wilson; grandchildren, Ashley (Jared) Bussey, Adam (Lenley) Faust, Justin Burt, Abbey (Brian) Gravitt, Beth Anne Wilson; great grandchildren, Colvin Bussey, Hudson Bussey, Caroline Bussey, Harrison Faust, Ryder Faust, Ashlen Faust and Myles Gravitt; a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family. The love that she showed us all will be a legacy that will never go away; she will always be our “Nenny”.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 12:00 noon at the First Baptist Church of Oneonta with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Bro. Larry Gipson will officiate.
