Prime Minister of Lithuania. A member of the Lithuanian Nationalist Union, he served as prime minister from September 23, 1929 to March 24, 1938. Prior to becoming prime minister, he graduated from the Polytechnical Institute in Riga in 1908. For a short time, he worked as a teacher and during World War I in 1915, he was then drafted into the Russian army. In 1918 he returned to Lithuania, and worked for the Council of Lithuania at an education commission. He then became Minister of Agriculture and State Property serving from November 11,1918 to March 12, 1919. Next, he served as Minister of Education from April 12, 1919 to June 19, 1920. From March of 1938 until December 5, 1938 he was Minister of Agriculture. He was also the Governor of the Bank of Lithuania in 1939. He is best remembered for a stable economy, national currency litas, and small foreign debt despite the Great Depression.
