Edward Aloysius was born December 26, 1902, New London, Wisconsin, to William and Catherine (Kelly) Finnegan. His family moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1913. Edward entered the minor seminary run by the Friars Minor in Teutopolis, Illinois for a stay of three years. He left for Mt. St. Francis Seminary in the fall of 1919. On August 1, 1920, he was invested with the Conventual Franciscan habit at St. Benedict Church, Terre Haute, Indiana, and was given the name of Friar Ambrose. The next day he left for Syracuse, New York to begin his novitiate. He made Solemn Profession, September 21, 1924, Rensselaer, New York, and was ordained a prisst on May 29, 1926, Albany, New York.
Father Ambrose's assignments were varied but mostly pastoral. He was Assistant Novice Master; teacher of History and Choir Master; rector and superior of the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation; and pastor at St. Anthony in Lorain, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky. In 1959, Father Ambrose became the founding pastor at St. Bonaventure, Bloomington, Minnesota and served there for eleven years. Most of his retirement years were spent at Franciscan Retreats, Prior Lake, Minnesota. In early February 2000, Ambrose's health had deteriorated and he was in and out of the hospital so that he had to be admitted to Saint Gertrude's health Center, Shakopee, Minnesota. It was there with five of the friars around him saying the Litany of the Blessed Mother that Father Ambrose died on October 22, 2001, at the age of ninety-eight. A pioneer in the Order, he laid the foundation for the Midwest Province of Our Lady of Consolation. Ambrose was very tall in stature. He was very kind, gentle, affectionate, humorist and concerned for the people he served. His interests were fishing, baseball games, cooking (especially fish) and reading all kinds of things especially things on Ireland. He loved his province and the people he served. He was a wise and wonderful friend to many and a Grandfather image to others but never patronizing. Ambrose liked to receive letters and he wrote often to his relatives and friends until near the end. Even though he had a hearing problem he participated in all the community activities. Father Ambrose held the distinction of being the second oldest Friar in the entire Conventual Franciscan Order at the time of his death.

May Ambrose and all our departed brothers, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
