Odell Stewart , 82, of Carson, CA was called to heaven on January 21, 2015. He was born in Sand Springs, Oklahoma on October 10, 1932 to Susie Taylor and George Stewart.
Odell attended Booker T. Washington High in Oklahoma where he played for the Ramblers football and basketball teams. He graduated with honors in 1950 and moved to Southern California.
In 1952 Odell joined the United States Army where he served with distinction as a sergeant in the heavy weapons infantry division, receiving several medals. Among them were the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, a Combat Infantry Badge and the United Nations Service Medal. He was Honorably Discharged from the Army of the United States in 1961.
After leaving the Army, Odell was employed at the Naval Supply Center in San Diego, CA as a woodworker. Odell subsequently transferred to the Naval Supply Center in San Pedro, CA where he quickly rose to the position of foreman.
After 35 years of work as a civilian supporting his country, he decided to serve in a different way. So, he began a new career as a crossing guard for twelve years for the city of Long Beach. In 1981 Odell found hope in Christ and united with Saint Luke Holy Baptist Church under the Pastorate of the late Reverend Verdell Calhoun. He faithfully served as a member of the Usher Board, became a deacon and served as the Treasurer until his passing.
While a member of Saint Luke, Odell met Jeanette Conerly who, after a long courtship, became Mrs. Odell Stewart. Odell was known by all as a kind, gentle and faithful servant of the Lord who was always ready and willing to lend a hand. He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity. The grocer, the banker, the people at the local cleaners, the mailman all knew and admired him for the love and devotion he always showed to his wife, Jeanette. Odell maintained his trademark smile and his sense of humor all the way to the end.
Odell will be forever remembered by his wife Jeanette, his sons Christopher and Marvin, his grandchildren Kyla, Jasmyne and Justin, his sister-in-law Pharella, brother-in-law George and a host of nieces, nephews and countless friends.
He has rejoined his sister Lovey and his two brothers Percy and Benny, who preceded him.
