As a member of the Seaman's Union shortly after the turn of the century he was fired from his Great Lakes sailing job for refusing to work with a nonunion crew. Later, as a structural iron worker on the Williamson Building construction, he fell and broke his arms and legs. After he recovered Mr. McLellan joined old Local 102 of the Painters Union where he was a trustee, later becoming president of Local 867. He was ousted in an internal squabble in the 1930s.
John's funeral was in Odessa, FL. Selma's funeral was in Tampa, FL. Both were buried in Keystone United Methodist Church Cemetery
