5029 Corporal M McSweeney (or Sweeney), 1st Battalion the Royal Munster Fusiliers. He deployed to South Africa with his battalion before the war started. They were employed on securing the lines of communication to support the Kimberley relief force under Lord Methuen. In Apr 1900 they joined the 20th Brigade under Major General Arthur Paget with 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and 4th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. They set out from Lindley, Orange Free State to the south east and after several days fighting captured Bethlehem on 7 Jul 1900. Cpl Sweeney was killed in action near Bethlehem. No grave has been identified at Bethlehem but there are a number of unnamed gravemarkers. He is also commemorated on the Royal Munster Fusiliers Boer War memorial in Muckross Road, Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=94) and as Cpl Sweeney on the Boer War memorial in West End Cemetery, Kimberley (see Find a Grave memorial 214393224).
