A memorial service to celebrate the life of Doris Holmes will be held Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, at 3 p.m. in First United Methodist Church. Dr. Keith Wiseman will officiate. A reception to greet family and friends will follow the service.

Mrs. Holmes passed away Sept. 6, 2007.

Doris was born on Dec. 18, 1921, to Russell B. and Hattie L. (Reavis) Carter. She attended elementary school in Crosbyton and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1939. She graduated from West Texas Hospital School of Nursing in December 1943. Doris married T.H. Holmes, Jr., on Dec. 26, 1943, in Lubbock. She worked as a nurse in Memphis, Tennessee; Fort Worth, Texas; and Lubbock. In 1949, she joined her husband in Japan, where he was a public health officer in the US Army. They returned to Fort Worth, then to Ralls, Texas. After 3 years in Houston, they moved to Lubbock in 1959.

Though Doris' first love was for her family, she was very active in the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Auxiliary; the Wheelock PTA; Forrest Heights United Methodist Church; and First United Methodist Church. Doris served as President of the Auxiliary, Wheelock PTA; and First United Methodist Women at FUMC. At Forrest Heights, she organized and, for several years, taught a Sunday school class for children with special needs. Doris loved gardening, and her yard showed it.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. T.H. Holmes; her son, Dr. Steve Holmes, of Lubbock; her daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Curtis) Fish, of Flower Mound, Texas; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to United Methodist Women, 1411 Broadway, 79401; First United Methodist Church, 1411 Broadway, 79401; the Alzheimer's Association, 6630 S. Quaker Ave., Ste. E, 79413; or your favorite charity.
