He was 79. Born in Boston, he graduated from Somerville High School in 1932 and attended the Tilton School in Tilton, N.H. He graduated from Tufts University in 1938 and from Tufts School of Medicine in 1942.
During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the Atlantic Fleet Amphibious. Later, as an active member of the VFW George Dilboy Post 529 in Somerville, Dr. Arbeene in 1957 became the first person to hold the local, state and national position of surgeon general for the organization. He was reelected to that post in 1973. From 1944 to 1947 he was a staff and faculty member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was in charge of the school's Army training program.
Dr. Arbeene worked in Somerville for 23 years as a general practitioner. He then worked at Raytheon Corp. Missiles Systems Division as its medical director until he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Association and the American Occupational Medical Association. He was a founding member of the Boston and Massachusetts Association for Retired Children and served as veterans' state coordinator for the Easter Seal Association Telethon.
In 1972, he was the commodore of the Charles River Yacht Club.
He leaves four daughters, Norma Foti of Ramstein, Germany, Karlyn Arbeene of Wrentham, Georgeen Day of Brookline, N.H., and Christine Kingsley of Hampstead, N.H.; two sons, Stephen of Bedford and Gregg of Augorra Hills, Calif.; a sister; two brothers; and nine grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church in Cambridge. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Hyde Park.
