Superintendent Edwards transitioned to his heavenly home on Thursday, August 20, 2020, at 7:45 a.m. surrounded by his beloved family. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him and ultimately gave him peace to enter eternal rest.

Pastor Ira Edwards, Sr. was born as the 11th child of 13 children to the late Mr. Joe and Ollie Edwards of Dublin, Georgia, on December 1, 1928. He attended Mount Pullen School and sacrificed his own formal education to assist his mother and younger siblings to pursue their dreams as he ran the family farm.? His employment included J.P. Stevens Manufacture Co., Worthen Wholesale Co., and later as supervisor of Cochran Brothers Wholesale Co. for 35 plus years. After retirement, he served as a bus driver for several years for Dublin City School System. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, studying and preaching the Word of God, enjoying Word Search puzzles, and attending to his animals.

At the age of 21, he attended a revival at Jordan Grove Church of God in Christ where his heart was profoundly convicted and led him to receive salvation. On that "faithful Thursday night" as he often shared, he willingly accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined the Jordan Grove COGIC. This would lay the foundation for his personal ministry that has reached far beyond his humble beginnings. His servant heart would have him transport the older saints to church where he faithfully served as the Sunday School Superintendent among many other various duties. Even then, God was molding him into a great leader. Early in his Christian walk, he met a beautiful saved young woman by the name of Inez O'Neal at a revival at Zion Hope COGIC. On August 4, 1951, the two united in holy matrimony in her parents' home. To that union, God has blessed the fruit of their labor with 8 children, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Superintendent and Mother Edwards were leading examples of rearing their children in a godly manner and influencing them to be dedicated servants to God, their church, and the community.

As the scripture has referenced, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord," therefore, in 1958, Min. Edwards was elevated as pastor of the Rangers Grove COGIC in Wrightsville, Georgia, and in 1963 as pastor of Jordan Grove COGIC in East Dublin, Georgia. With his anointed messages of hope and salvation, Pastor Edwards continued to preach the Word of God with power and conviction. As a result, he led many youth and adults to Christ who now serve in various leadership capacities in various states. He remained the pastor of both churches, Rangers Grove COGIC (62 years) and Jordan Grove COGIC (57 years) until his transition. In 1980, Pastor Ira Edwards' mantle expanded, and he was appointed as Dublin District Superintendent for the Dublin District COGIC and faithfully served for the past 40 years. In the Dublin-Laurens Community, he was highly esteemed as a man of integrity and moral character and served as a spiritual advisor and role model for countless young men. There are not enough words to describe the impact that Superintendent Ira Edwards made on everyone he encountered from the greatest to the least in stature and his legacy will continue to remain in those he loved and cherished. Preceding in his death were his 6 brothers and 5 sisters; and recently his sister-in-law, the late Elizabeth McCloud; and his son-in-law, the late Bro. Kenneth O'Neal.

He leaves to cherish his fondest memories to his beloved wife of 69 years, Mother Inez Edwards, (affectionately known as his "Sugar Pie"); his beloved eight children: Evangelist Sharon (Elder Andrew) Blackwell of Dumfries, VA; Missionary Patricia Edwards of Dublin; Brother Alonzo (Carol) Edwards of Dublin; Elder Donald (Tina) Edwards of Decatur, GA; Bro. Stevie (Brenda) Edwards of Macon; Dr. Diann Edwards-O'Neal of Dublin; Elder Sheriff Ira (Teresa) Edwards, Jr. of Athens, GA ,and Bro. Anthony Glenn (Debbie) Edwards of Fredericksburg, VA; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, his youngest brother, Deacon Joshua (Helen) Edwards of Daytona Beach, FL; his brother-in-law Deacon Mullis McCloud of Dublin; special caregivers Willie Edwards, Brandon Thomas, and Ada Davis; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and dear friends. He was viewed as a spiritual father and mentor to the beloved Dublin District churches, the Dublin/Laurens County community, and countless ministers of the Gospel across the country. The life and legacy of Supt. Edwards will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
