Jacob Flowers was born July 4, 1827 in Greene Co., Pennsylvania to John Flowers and Catherine Lemley. In about 1844 the family moved to Virginia (now WV) and settled in Wood County. On Jan. 8, 1852, Jacob married Elizabeth Meeks in Parkersburg, Wood, Virginia. In the early years of their marriage, Jacob was a plantation overseer. In the 1860's he was a steamboat owner and captain on the Ohio River. In 1865 two of his boats were sunk, without insurance, and sometime in 1866 Jacob moved with his family aboard the remaining boat to Wyandotte, KS. However the family did not like the heat and humidity in Kansas and in 1872 Jacob organized members of the Wyandotte Colony and moved to Colorado, where he settled in Pleasant Valley near For Collins. It was there that Jacob founded the town of Bellvue (inc. 1887) and built a beautiful stone house, now on the National Register, and a general store, the B. F. Flowers General Store, which is now the Cache la Poudre Grange and Bellvue Senior Center. "Uncle Jake" was a generous man, who loved a celebration, especially on the 4th of July. He had a horse race track near his home, and a beautiful orchard. In 1879 Jacob constructed a wagon road in rough terrain over the nearby mountains to North Park, which is still called "Old Flowers Road." Jacob died on Nov. 15, 1900, at his home in Bellvue. His wife Elizabeth preceded him in death on September 18, 1890, in Bellvue. Their children were:
THORNTON WESLEY FLOWERS, b. May 03, 1854, Wood Co., Va.; d. January 26, 1911, Ketchum, Blaine Co., Idaho.
SARDIS W. FLOWERS, b. March 1855, Wood County, Va.; d. April 09, 1906, Castleton, Grand Co., Utah.
