She was the wife and life partner of the late John Soley Houghton.
She was born in North Providence. She was the daughter of the late William H. and Eva Dow Ingham.
She was an Office Worker at Brown & Sharpe and Leviton Mfg. A communicant of Roger Williams Baptist Church and Sunday School teacher for many years. Merle's enthusiasm and quest for knowledge included; furniture upholstery and refinishing, rugbraiding, cake decorating, calligraphy, genealogy and hosting international students. Her later years were spent exploring beliefs in spiritual enlightenment and life's many mysteries.
She was the loving mother, of son John Kim Houghton of Coventry, daughter M. Eve Houghton Sowers and son in law James Sowers, devoted grandmother of Tyler H. and Ava Mei H. Sowers, with whom she lived.
Also survived by two brothers William Ingham of Augusta, ME and Clifford "Kiffy" Ingham of Foster. She was the sister of the late Clare "Inky" Ingham and Fay Harris.
She is reemebered for being a sweet, kind, and caring soul. She shared her enthusiasm, curiosity, wisdom and love with all that she could. She will be deeply missed.
