Justus was the 4th of 9 children (3rd son) born of Lemma Bartholomew (1787-1873) and his wife Elizabeth (Betsey) Sherwood Bishop (1787-1871).

Justus married, September 2, 1841 in Whitehall, Washington County, New York, Sally Ann Wood (1820-1892) by whom he had 10 children (8 sons and 2 daughters): Lewis R. (b. 1842), George (1843-1848), Betsy E. (b. 1844), Orson C. (b. 1847), George H. (1849-1933), Nathaniel W. (b. 1851), Fanny (1853-1854), Lemma (b. 1856), Frederick (b. 1858), and Elmer Jefferson (b. 1862).
