Only the 1840 Parke County Indiana census lists any children and the others do not. There is 1 male under age 5, a female 5-9 and 1 female 20-29, that I can't identify. Whose children were they? In addition to them is a male 30-39 and female 20-29 which represent William and his wife.
On the 6 Aug 1860 Barnes Mills P.O., Washington, Parke Co., IN census, I found farmer Wm Strain, 55 Elizabeth Strain, 54; farmhand Robert Copeland, 22 and Elizabeth McCutchen, 12. The Strains were born in Virginia and the others in IN. (Was he visiting his nephews and nieces in Rockbridge Co., Virginia on 13 July 1860, 24 days earlier? A Wm T Strain, age 50 was listed on that census also, residing with (his nephew) James A Strain and James 3 younger siblings.)
On the 1870 Greene, Parke Co., Indiana census, I found farmer Wm Strain, 65 and Elizabeth Strain, 64, both Virginia born.
On the 1880 Greene, Parke Co., Indiana census, I found retired farmer Wm Strain, 75 and wife Elizabeth, 74, both Virginia born. His father was born in Pennsylvania and mother in "Ireland" (sic). (On the Augusta Co., Virginia Death Register, it says his mother was born in Pennsylvania instead, though her older family was believed to be in Northern Ireland.)
William's will was written on 18 Oct 1882 and was recorded on 4 Nov 1889 in Parke County, Indiana (will book 3, page 469-472). He leaves all his real and personal property to his beloved wife; and after her death, all his personal property goes to Martha E McMurtry (wife of David McMurtry), plus Robert W Cooper, is to received all real estate, following Elizabeth's death. A 1 Jun 1883 codicil was added to refine the terms of the will.
There was a death notice in the Rockville Republican dated Wed. 6 Nov 1889, page 4, it says: "Wm. Strain, male, white, age 85, died Oct 30, 1889, Judson." Judson is not really close to Portland Mills but the Portland Mills correspondent may have been the closest one at the time according to the librarian at the Indiana State Library.
The Indiana Death Index lists the same, Wm Strain, died 30 Oct 1889 in Judson, Indiana, aged 85, born 1804. County Health Office Rockville, Book H-14 on p 4 within the series produced by the Indiana WPA.
William and his wife are buried at Seceder Cemetery. It is maintained currently by Portland Mills Cemetery and is nearby it.
The tall granite monument (reminds me of the rook, a chess piece. It reads:
WILLIAM STRAIN,
BORN
Jan. 28, 1805,
DIED
Oct. 30, 1889
The monument says "STRAIN" at the bottom in large block letters and has a cursive "S" at the to. His wife Elizabeth's name, is on the other side of the stone.
