According to the 1939 Register, taken on the eve of the outbreak of WWII, Amos ROBERTS was born on the 30th December 1882 meaning he arrived just before the year 1883 did! Marrying Lavinia PHILLIPS at St John the Evangelist Church on 31st March 1907, they had been married for 4 years and had their first child by the time the 1911 Census was taken. Little Hannah ROBERTS was 2 years old, so probably born around 1909, and the family was living in nearby Albert St (renamed Charlotte St in the 1950s) very close to the churchyard where Lavinia and Amos now rest. Interestingly they have given their address as Albert St Back, possibly referring to a loop or spur off that street which almost doubles back on itself, or possibly living at the back of another property. No house number is given.

By the 1939 Register they certainly had expanded their family and now had 6 children living under their roof at 11 Wilson Way, just down the hill from this churchyard. Their names and birth dates were given as:

Thomas, 18-04-1911 - a Hewer in one of the local collieries.
John, 26-05-1914 - a potter's 'biscuit placer' (placing unglazed pieces in the kiln)
Arthur, 18-04-1919 - a Potter's 'batter out' (preparing clay for working into goods)
Amos, 31-10-1920 - a Potter's 'packer'
Harry, 20-07-1922 - Potters 'mould runner'
Hilda, 18-02-1929 - at school
