Henry Wyche, born Oct. 7, 1604, Son of Richard (and Elizabeth) of London.

From the Register of St Nicholas Church:

"Sutton / Henry Wych, being a non Regent Maister of Arts in the University of Cambridge was inducted by Thomas Pope into the Rectorie [sic] of Sutton, June 10th An. Dom. 1636; after a Resignation made of the same Rectorie [sic] by Jose Glover, who was much beloved of the most (if not of All), & his Departure much lamented of the most, if not of All."[1]

"Burialls [sic] 1678 [...] Mr Henery [sic] Wych Rector of Sutton Sept. 15".[2]

An unattributed note:

"On 15 Sep 1678 Mr Henery Wych, Rector of Sutton was buried. His tomb is in the church."

The ledger stone, which is let into the floor of the present-day church (built 1862-1864), was transcribed in its original position (c.1719) by the antiquarian, John Aubrey, as follows:

"Reverendissimus Henricus / Wych, Vir pius, probus, Doc-/tus, bene natus, Eccl. / Paroc. de Sutton, Rector / Obiit Anno Christi MDC/LXVIII [sic]. Ætat: suæ LXXVI. / Idibus Sept."[3]

That transcription contains punctuation which does not appear on the stone, and gives the year as 1668, rather than 1678, as it appears in the parish register. A more accurate transcription made from a photograph of the stone is provided on this Find a Grave record.[4]

A suggested English translation of the inscription is as follows:

"The most reverend Henry Wych, a pious, honest, learned, and well-born man. Parish priest and Rector of Sutton. Died in September in the year of Christ 1678, in his 76th year."
