Obituary - Doniphan, July 30
Mr. Wylie Smith, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 25, at the age of 25 [sic] years at his home southeast of Doniphan. Although he had been in poor health for years, it was only in the past few months that he seemed to fail rapidly. Mr. Smith was born in Washington county, Pa., Feb. 1, 1834. He was the son of Andrew Smith and Jane Barr Smith. When he was 19 years old his parents moved to Ohio, and Dec. 25, 1860, he was married to Miss Nancy Carpenter. They spent a few years in California and in the year 1873 moved to Nebraska and settled on the farm where he passed away. Eleven children came to make this home happy. They are Emma (Mrs. G. W. Snearly), John, a little girl who died in infancy, George, Mary, Lucy, Laura, Albert and Clara, four others of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Smith and the seven remaining children who all live in the same neighborhood were at his bedside most of the time for the last two days he lived.
Mr. Smith was converted at the age of 19 and joined the Presbyterian church of which he was a devout and consistent member all his life. Ever since there was a Presbyterian church organized in Hansen, he has been one of its most earnest workers. He was also very much interested in foreign missions and gave liberally to this branch of the church work. . .
The funeral was held at the home Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The services were conducted by Rev. Schofield, until recently pastor of the church at Hansen. . . Interment was made in the Doniphan cemetery.
