2253 Private A (or K) Finlayson, 1st Battalion the (Queen's Own) Cameron Highlanders. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer war, sailing from Egypt, where they had been stationed, on 3 Mar 1900, and arrived in South Africa twenty days later. They got up to Bloemfontein in time to join the army in the northern advance, and along with the 1st Sussex, 1st Derbys, and City Imperial Volunteers, they composed the 21st Brigade under Major General Bruce Hamilton. They had some stiff fighting in the Orange Free State and were present at the battle of Diamond Hill 11-12 Jun 1900. Pte Finlayson died of disease in the military hospital, Frankfort, Orange Free State. He is is also commemorated on the Cameron Highlanders Boer War memorial in St Giles' Cathedral, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Scotland (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/132849/).
