Jonas enlisted on 10 March 1862 at the age of 27 years, he served in Co. C, 61st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he was promoted to Corp on 1 November 1864 and was wounded in action. he was discharged with honor on 5 July 1865.

Jonas married Sarah Burton on 17 Nov 1861 in Pickaway, Ohio. Their children:
