Emily Barnhill, daughter of William Murphy Barnhill and Sarah Jane Smith, married Millard Estes Brown on July 10, 1922 in Whitley County. Mamaw was a hard worker and an excellent cook, and loved John Denver music, her favorite being "Country Roads."
She and her husband, Millard, had and raised 12 children. Her ninth child, Virginia Lee Brown, who was born March 24, 1939, was struck and killed by lightening in the family's barn on June 16, 1946 during a severe thunderstorm in the presense of her older sister, Mildred Marie Brown Estep.
Known to her son-in-law, Donald Estep, as "Mrs. Brown," he fondly remembers always finding a biscuit and either some sausage or bacon on the stove no matter what time of day or night it was.
Although living a rather hard life she was known not to be a fancy or frivolous woman, however, she loved hats. So, every Easter her daughter, Mildred Marie, would buy her a brand new Easter bonnet, and on their way to Easter services that morning, she and her two daughters, Beth and Amy, would stop by the house and present Emily with her new chapeau.
