Wanda Izell Joyner died peacefully of natural causes in hospice, Corpus Christi, Texas on January 30, 2009. She was born April 14, 1925, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the daughter of Ermond Izell and Eva Harwell Izell. A graduate of Muskogee High School, she studied chemistry at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. At the university she met her lifetime love, Army veteran Joe Joyner. In 1948, she was working for Reynolds Aluminum in Lake Charles, Louisiana, as their first woman research chemist. She worked at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock in 1950 on anti-cancer research. Joe and Wanda were wed in 1950 at Winfield Methodist Church in Little Rock, and they lived a wonderful life of love and great joy, celebrating 58 anniversaries. A gifted musician and Christian of great faith, she and her husband were constant choir members at United Methodist churches in Texas, California, Colorado, and Arizona for over 50 years. She performed as a member of the Park City Women’s Chorus in Dallas in the nineteen-sixties. After her children were grown, she returned to professional life as a technical editor for Honeywell Corporation in the nineteen-eighties. In later life she was a devoted volunteer, receiving a Presidential 2006 Volunteer Service Award from the White House for her work at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Joe Joyner; and her daughter, Mary Kathryn Joyner. She is survived by her son, John Joyner of Little Rock; her sisters, Mary Frances Hodges and Alene Adkins, also of Little Rock; and her granddaughter, Ava Joyner.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at Griffin Leggett Forest Hills Funeral Home, 10200 Hwy 5 North, Alexander (501-455-1067). Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
