Ferdinand Bennett, Jr., was called “Bob” by almost everyone who knew him, including his children and grandchildren. He was born in Clinton, North Carolina on June 9, 1937 to the late Mattie McPhail Bennett and Ferdinand Bennett, Sr., the third male child in the family of six children. He was even-tempered and involved with his siblings, relatives and friends. Ferdinand departed this life on Friday, October 16, 2020 after a brief period of illness in the comfort of his home surrounded by immediate family. He joins his wife Mary Magdalene and three children- Samuel, Moses, Mattie Delois, his parents and brothers John and Jeremiah, who preceded him in death.

Bob was a member of Union Grove Church of Christ . He was educated in the Clinton City School system, graduating from Sampson High School in 1956. In high school he was involved in both basketball and baseball. He attended Kittrell Junior College in Kittrell, North Carolina on a football scholarship for one year. After Kittrell, he returned to Clinton, worked at Reynold’s Drug store as a stock clerk and delivery man and played baseball with the semi-pro Clinton Pirates.
Bob married Mary Magdalene Wilson in 1959 and began their family. In 1967, he moved the family to Newark, New Jersey. He continued his involvement with baseball most his adult life as player, coach, and manager of the semi-pro Newark-East Orange Jets alternating visits every other year with the Clinton Pirates, then coached by his younger brother Robert. He worked as a truck driver for Yellow Freight and PIE trucking company for many years before retiring in 1999.

Bob loved his family and would do anything to see them smile. He spent most of his days watching sports. Boy did he love those Dodgers and Washington Redskins. Mary became sick and he put everything on hold to care for his wife. There was nothing that you could say or do to get him to leave her side. On July 1st when she took her last breath, he was devastated and did not wanna live without her. 3 ½ months later, they are reunited again.

Bob was a life member of Sampson High School Alumni Association.
