Weapons Maker. He worked in his father's gunshop as a young man, eventually running it himself. In the 1820s, he worked to develop a cheap, compact pistol that could be easily concealed. His efforts produced one of the most famous American guns - the derringer. The short-barrel, large caliber weapon he developed became instantly popular, and was one of the most successful, and most recognizable, guns made in the 19th Century. John Wilkes Booth used a derringer to assassinate Abraham Lincoln at the end of the Civil War.
