On 11 August 1862 John went to Henry, Marshall County, Illinois where he volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised. It was to become Co. B of thee 86th Illinois and was mustered in by Capt. Elias C. Breasley with the other 931 men on 27 Aug 1862. He was one of the older men in the regiment. On September 7, 1862 the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria with much fanfare down to the railroad depot. There they were joined by the men of the 85th Illinois. At the depot the men boarded trains bound for Camp Jo Holt, located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. While the green troops were here in the Louisville area, the change in diet and living conditions began to take it's toll on the men. Three weeks after arriving at Camp Joe Holt, the men of the 85th and 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. But, when McCook's Brigade took to the field, many men were left behind in the Army Hospitals established in Louisville.

On October 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th suffering their first casualties. After the Battle of Perryville the men marched on toward Nashville, Tennessee where they would go into winter camp. During the winter of 1862/63 the Nashville hospitals were full to overflowing with sick troops. John Wright was one of these men.

Whatever his ailment, nothing the doctors did seemed to help his situation. Finally during the first weeks of the new year, the army doctors decided the best thing they could do for Private Wright was to discharge him and send him home in hopes that with the help of family and some home cooking, he would regain his health. So on January 18, 1863, Private John Wright was discharged from the service for disability and sent home. Once home John Wright slowly regained his health and strength. But two years later in 1865, John Wright again volunteered to serve in the Union army. He was placed in Co. I 47th Regiment of Illinois Consolidated Infantry. He served out the remainder of the war doing garrison duty in the south, and was mustered out 21 Jan 1866 in Demopolis, Alabama.

Shortly after returning from the service, John and Christianna moved west to Solomon Township, Cloud County, Kansas where they were on the 1870 census. On the 1880 census they were back in Ganges, Allegan County, Michigan.
