Actress. She is best remembered for her portrayal of the witty and fashionable Gloria Hamilton in "The Mad Miss Manton" (1938). Born into a family of wealth and position, she began her career as a model with the prestigious John Powers Agency when she was discovered by a talent scout during a fashion show in New York City, New York, in 1934 and was given a film contract with RKO Radio Pictures. Between 1935 and 1941, she appeared in over 30 motion pictures, often typecast as a debutante, society girl, secretary. wife, friend, socialite, and businesswoman in such feature films as "Roberta" (1935), "Reckless" (1935), "Follow the Fleet" (1936), "A Star is Born" (1937), "This Marriage Business" (1938), "I'm From the City" (1938), "Carefree" (1938), "Beauty for the Asking" (1939), "Twelve Crowded Hours" (1939), "Man from Montreal" (1939), "Laughing at Danger" (1940), "Sky Murder" (1940), "Maisie Was a Lady" (1941), "The Trial of Mary Dugan" (1941), "Sergeant York" (1941), and "Flying Blind" (1941). She also appeared in stage productions of "The Children's Hour," "Private Lives," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Brewster's Millions," "The Women," and "Allegro". During her career, she was married to New York Baseball Manager Dan Topping and cinematographer Edward Cronjager; both unions ended in divorce. After retiring from acting in 1968 following a guest appearance on the sitcom "Burke's Law", she settled in Michigan and spent the remainder of her life devoted to family, volunteered with Catholic Charities, sat as a chairwoman for the Michigan State Democratic Committee, and worked extensively with her local charter of Habitat for Humanity.
