Henry Akay was born 8-4-1842 in New York the son of Robert(or Francis) and Louise Akay. His place of birth varies on different documents. It was either New York or Canada. i Obituary states New York which is most likely correct.

He had 7 known siblings.

He came to Michigan in 1826 when 16 years old.. Most of his life here was spend in the Waterloo area in Jackson County and Chelsea area of Washtenaw Co. In the early 1860's he was married to Eliza Howlett.

To this union 4 daughters were born.
Nettie 11-28-1862 to 8-27-1939
Addie 1865 to 1-8-1958
Melvina 2-9-1868 to 7-27-1939
Ella May 5-15-1871 to 10-23-1914

Henry enlisted on 8-12-1862 in the Union Army Co B 26th Michigan Infantry . While serving he was wounded but returned to the war. He was discharged 8-12-1865. Due to the injuries during the battles he drew a disability pension from the government.

It is not known where Eliza, Nettie and Addie were during his time in the service.

Eliza died in 1875. She is buried in the Mt Hope Cemetery Waterloo, MI along with her parents and many other Howlett relatives.

Little has been found about Henry after her death. The daughters lived with relatives.

Nettie was living with her Grandmother Mary Howlett in Lyndon. Later still living with her grandmother she was teaching school.

Addie unknown at this time.

Melvina (Vina or Vinnie) with her uncle and aunt, Samuel and Betsy (Howlett) West in the Jackson while attending school.

Little is known about Ella at this time. Various documents and census show her with the James P Wood family in Chelsea listed as an adopted daughter. Some of her papers show her as Ella May Akay and others as May E Wood. Research will continue to find more on this information. She was only 3 or 4 when her mother died.

It does not appear that Henry ever remarried.

It is believed this may have been the Veterans Hospital.

Henry died 10-13-1921. At the Soldier's Retirement Home in Grand Rapids, MI. He is buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery a long side Eliza.

His daughters:
Nettie married Herbert Yocum 11-28-1883 in Lyndon, MI. She died 8-27-1939 and is buried in North Waterloo Cemetery in North Waterloo, Jackson Co. MI with Herbert

Addie married George Smith 8-11-1887 in Washtenaw Co. MI
She died 1-8-1958 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor, MI. with George and a daughter.

Melvina married William West 1887. She died 7-27-1939 and is buried in Howard Cemetery, Ingham Twp MI with William, 2 of her sons and a infant daughter plus a grandson and granddaughter .

Ella married William Schnaitman 3-2-1895 in Chelsea MI. She died 10-23-1914 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Chelsea, MI with William and several of her 6 children.
