President of Nicaragua. He gained a place in history for being the President of Nicaragua, though only serving for days. An 1898 graduate in medicine of the University of León, Argüello Barreto entered politics in 1912 when he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the Nicaraguan National Congress. Having served in various cabinet posts for different Nicaraguan Presidents, he was himself an unsuccessful candidate for President of Nicaragua in 1936. In 1947 he was elected President of Nicaragua with the support of longtime dictator Anastasio Somoza García, however his presidency was cut short after only 26 days in office when Somoza overthrew him after he attempted to pursue programs against Somoza's wishes. During this time, the nation's government was very unstable. Six months later, he died in Mexico in exile and was buried at that location. He was the seven-year younger brother of Nicaraguan politician and poet Santiago Argüello Barreto. The family was direct descendants of General Narciso Jose Argüello y Monsivais, who came to Nicaragua in 1730.
