Excerpt -- John A. Gocke, a young merchant well know in this city, as well as over a considerable area of the northern portion of the State, died at his residence on Eoff Street, South Side, yesterday evening, after an illness of a little less than two weeks. Mr. Gocke, who who had just passed his twenty-sixth birthday, was a young man whose character combined many notable traits. He was possessed of excellent social and business qualities, and had a host of warm personal friends, who will mourn his death. He was born in Howesville, Preston County, his parents were John Julius and Catherine Gocke, both natives of Preston. On January 26, 1876, he married Maggie, daughter of Peter Riley, and about five months ago removed to this city, engaging with his brother, Thomas, in the conduct of an art store at 1107 Market Street. A week ago he was stricken down with a malady that grew steadily worse. A few days ago apprehensions as to the end brought his parents and Rev. Father Joseph J. Gocke, a brother, whose pastorate is at Millen, Ohio, in the Cleveland Diocese, to his bedside. All efforts to stay the progress of the disease proved futile, and last evening death closed the career of a most excellent young man. The funeral services will take place Monday morning from the Cathedral the hour to be hereafter set.
