Swanton, MD – Charles Lewis Amos, 90, of Swanton, MD, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at Sterling Care at Frostburg Village.

Born October 4, 1930, in Baltimore, MD, Charles was the son of the late Charles Whitridge Amos and Frances Crawford (Lewis) Amos and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A graduate of Towson High School (Towson, MD) Class of 1949, and the University of Baltimore, Class of 1955, Charles also completed an art education from 1941 to 1949 studying under the tutelage of Marjorie Dorsey Martinet.

Charles served in the 29th Division of the Maryland Army National Guard, volunteered with the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Department, and was employed by the Western Maryland Railway, the Federal Railway Administration, and the Association of American Railroads.

After retirement, Charles was active in community service, church, painting, and railroading. He successfully combined his art talent with his railroad expertise and became nationally recognized as a classical painter of railway heritage. One of his greatest joys was serving for ten plus years as one of the engineers of "Mountain Thunder," Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s steam locomotive #734.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Virginia (Judefind) Amos, to whom he was extremely happily married for 57 years. He is survived by his four children Charles William Amos, James Whitridge Amos, Brook Todd Amos, and Mary Belle "Molly" (Amos) Smutny, his eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Amos was known for his sense of humor and "corny" jokes. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was grateful to God for his many challenges and opportunities and lived his life with exuberance.
