Cathy Baughman Robinson, age 61, passed away on November 20, 2020, four weeks after suffering a heart attack and multiple complications both during and after heart surgery.
Born on November 1, 1959 in Saluda SC, Cathy was the daughter of the late Donald “Sonny” Baughman and the late Louise Harvey Baughman.
Cathy is survived by her husband Stephen Robinson of Irmo SC, her daughter Billie Jo Penny of Columbia SC, her son Troy Risinger of Irmo SC, her two granddaughters Gwendolyn Hepp of Kannapolis NC and Cassidy Irvin of Rock Hill SC, her two grandsons Trenton and Trevor Risinger of Gilbert SC, her three brothers Dexter Baughman of Gilbert SC, Clarence Baughman of Newberry SC, and Mark Baughman of Gilbert SC, two sisters Melissa Mattingly of Gaston SC and Sabrina Dropps of Greenwood SC, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cathy was a strong woman who had the will and courage to overcome the many hardships, obstacles, and setbacks that life dealt her. After a childhood of poverty and instability, Cathy and her brothers were eventually placed in the care of the Epworth Children’s Home in Columbia SC. Because of this life experience, Cathy was determined that she would provide her children a stable and loving home. She put the wants and needs of her family first, before her own wants and needs. She chose to end an abusive first marriage, and start anew with her second husband Stephen, whom she met in 1986 and married in 1989.
Cathy worked very hard throughout her lifetime. She worked at Wellington Synthetic Fibers in Batesburg-Leesville SC for ten years, then founded and operated her own business “Cathy’s Child Care” in West Columbia SC for six years. After closing her business, Cathy obtained her High School GED and then continued her education at Midland Technical College. This education qualified her for jobs that she had not been previously qualified for, and in 2000 she was hired by SC DHEC. She began her career at SC DHEC in the Department Of Vital Records. She made several upward movements within SC DHEC during her 20 year career, and her last position held was as an Administrative Assistant for the Drinking Water Division of the Bureau of Water.
Cathy was a loving spouse, mother, and grandmother. To Cathy, her family was everything. Cathy loved home-life. There was no where that she would rather have been than at home, enjoying simple things such as housekeeping, cooking, gardening, entertaining her children and grandchildren, and sometimes just simply relaxing. Cathy had a love for all of god’s creatures, especially dogs. There was never a time in her life when she did not have multiple pets. Later in life, Cathy learned to horseback ride. Cathy told her story of earning the trust of a horse that had never been truly loved by any of its owners in the chapter titled “Mattie’s Journal” in the 2008 book “Mares! Ya Gotta LOVE‘em” by Betsy Kelleher. Cathy was a believer that talked to God everyday, thanking Him and his son Jesus for her and her family’s many blessings and asking that he be by her and her family’s side during times both good and bad.
Cathy was a unique and one-of-a-kind individual. She will be terribly missed by everyone, but she will never, ever be forgotten.
