Religious and civic leader - Second son of Rabbi Joseph Messing and Fogel Rothenstein,born in Jeniskowa, Germany. Mayer Messing came to the United States in 1867 and served as Rabbi for the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation 1867 thru 1907 (over 40 years). Rabbi Messing was active in the city's civic and charitable life. He married Ricca Naphtali on December 29, 1868, and had children Esther, Dora, Minnie, Abraham Lincoln, Emma, Samuel, Sarah and Josephine.
