William's date of birth is less than certain. He was the son of William Arms and Sara Fautrart. He married Joanna Hawks on November 21, 1677, in Massachusetts. They were the parents of William (1676-1690), Sarah (1681, Zebediah Williams), Margaret (1683, William Belding), Hannah (1685, Joseph Clesson), Ebenezer, John (1679), Daniel (1687), and William (1692) and Elizabeth (1695, Ebenezer Field).

William was a soldier under Captain Turner at Hadley on April 6, 1676. He was also in the Falls fight May 19, 1676. He came to Deerfield, MA on about 1698. He settled on the south end of the street on "Arms" corner.

Contributed by #47033961 - William was born in Jersey, Channel Islands. a record of his baptism was found in recently cataloged and indexed records in Jersey. St. Brelade's Parish, Jersey. The original is written in French and translated:

ARME: The year 1655, the 19th day of September. William, son of William Arme and Sara Fautrart, born from debauchery, was baptized and presented by Marie Rosze.

Pierre Faultrart, was the rector of St. Brelade's parish at the time of William's birth, and this may explain why William was educated.

William Arms was a knitter of stockings and he could knit a pair while going to and coming from the Hatfield Mill. According to the History of Deerfield and other sources. [Note: being a knitter was not common for men, however it was very common for men and women of Jersey. In fact, it was a cottage industry in the 1500s that they had laws requiring the people not to during planting or harvesting seasons and not to knit in church.]

Further searching did not reveal additional records on the Arme family for over 100 years. Nothing more is known about his parents. I do have copies of the 1998 correspondence with St. Brelade's Parrish.
