2804 Private A Perry, South African Light Horse. Volunteered for service in the South African Light Horse during the Second Anglo Boer War, which was raised in Cape Colony in Nov 1899. Eight complete squadrons were raised by early Dec 1900. A portion was employed for a short time on the De Aar line in the Cape Colony, but three squadrons of the regiment were sent round to Natal and, with other mounted troops, were employed under Lord Dundonald on the right flank at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899. Three further squadrons were got ready at Cape Town and sent to Natal, but the other men who had been enrolled were retained in Cape Colony and went to form the nucleus of Roberts' Horse and Kitchener's Horse. The squadrons provided valuable service throughout the campaign. Pte Perry died of enteric fever (typhoid) at No 3 General Hospital, Kroonstad, Orange River Colony.

Date of death recorded as 20 Feb 1902 on the cemetery memorial and 19 Feb 1902 on the South African Field Force Casualty Roll & on In Memoriam by S Watt.
