12409 Gunner S Newman, 38th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. The battery was sent to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War and was deployed in the Orange Free State in Apr 1900 and had hard fighting around Lindley. They were at the capture of Bethlehem on 7 Jul 1900. They went with General Paget to the Transvaal, and a portion of the battery was at the taking of Erasmus' camp in Sep 1900 and at Rhenoster Kop on 29 Nov 1900. Early in 1901 the battery was with General Babington in the Western Transvaal, before sections of the battery were deployed to support columns and garrisons. The battery remained in South Africa as garrison troops after the war. Gunner Newman died of enteric fever (typhoid) at the military hospital, Newcastle, Natal.
