The following is taken from the research and writings of Dr. Ronald Stoner, retired professor of Bowling Green University, Ohio. Additional information about the Poe, Day and Trout lines can be found at http://physics.bgsu.edu/~stoner/gen/daypoe.htm

At the time of Dr. Stoner's writings, he had not discovered the parents of Rachel Trout Day but noted that "several Trouts moved from North Carolina to Lewis Township of Brown County, OH, in the early 1800s." Records show that Rachel Trout was born in North Carolina and married Isaac Day in Ohio before moving to Marion County, Indiana. Dr. Stoner speculates that Rachel came north to live with her brothers in Brown County, OH, when her father in North Carolina died.

According to Minutes in the Day Family Reunion Association, Benton Shenkle, the son of Edith Day Shenkle (eldest daughter of Rachel and Isaac), initiated a family reunion in 1926. Benton related the following about the origins of Rachel Trout Day which were handed down to him by his mother.

“Isaac Day married a lady (Rachel Trout) from near Charleston, N. C. She was an orphan but had wealthy brothers who were merchants and plantation owners. Isaac and Rachel Day were the parents of six sons and four daughters, Edith Day being the oldest."

Rachel Trout was indeed the sister of Trout brothers who were merchants in the little town of Feesburg, OH, not so far from where Casper Stoner (Find A Grave Memorial # 99156637) lived and the Day brothers grew up.

There is no Charleston, NC, but the person recording Benton’s recollection may have been referring to Charlotte, NC; there were Trout households in both Lincoln and Rowan Counties, near Charlotte, about the time Rachel was born.
