Martha Courtney

August 28, 1932 – February 10, 2007

Martha Courtney, 74, of Lexington passed away on Saturday, February 10 in the Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Rev. Linda O'Neal and Rev. Ron Liles will conduct the funeral service on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at the Lexington United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Burns Cemetery in Blue.

Mrs. Courtney was born in Lufkin on August 28, 1932 to Rudolph and Mattie (Stone) Childress. She married A.E. "Buddy" Courtney on November 23, 1955 in Lufkin. She was an educator and principal in the Silsbee area until her retirement. She and Buddy moved to Lexington six years ago. Buddy preceded her in death on January 31, 2003. Her parents and sister, Yvonne Childress also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Alan Courtney and wife Lori of Keller, Texas; daughter, Cindy Jackson and husband Joe of Lexington; brother, Kenneth Childress and wife Ann of Lufkin; grandchildren: Courtney Jackson of Lexington, Marcy Heine and husband John of Blue and Tammie Creek and husband Allen of Dime Box; great grandchildren: McKenzie and Kayden Heine and Madison Creek. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

She was a member of the Lexington United Methodist Church, Lexington UMW, Lexington Lions Club, Lexington Chamber of Commerce Director, former member of Economic Development Board of Silsbee and Board of Directors of Silsbee Country Club. She was a graduate of Lufkin High School in 1949, and received her Masters of Education from Stephen F. Austin. She taught middle school literature and typing, was Assistant Principal at Silsbee High School, Kindergarten Principal at Robinson Elementary in Silsbee at her retirement.
