Johnston, Pa., Jan 7,-One man is dead today and a woman is in a serious condition suffering from shock and exposure as a result of what local authorities believe to have a been a premature celebration last night of the Old Calendar Christmas.
John Curtis, 23, a mine and Miss Margaret Smith, 20, were found in the icy water of the Stoney Creek here early today. Curtis was pronounced dead upon his admission to Memorial Hospital and Miss Smith was suffering from shock and exposure and a badly frozen left leg.
The girl is said to have told officers that she and Curtis were attending a celebration and were returning home. They had started across the railroad bridge and heard a train coming. Curtis pushed her off the bridge and jumped into the water to keep the train from hitting them. Curtis is employed by the Valley Smokeless Coal Company at Riverside.
