Gene Austin Hicks, Sr., a resident of Mobile Alabama for 68 years, passed away on Tuesday January 5th at age 81. He was a husband, father, grandpa and coach. Born in Canoe Alabama on June 3rd, 1939. Our Dad was an avid lover of sports, travelling, and cowboy movies. Known to many as "Coach Hicks," he loved mentoring young men on the field of play. From playing high school sports to coaching and refereeing in the state of Alabama and all over the southeast region, he contributed to the athleticism and sports he loved. He was a master salesman and in later years an entrepreneur and business owner that succeeded with the same competitive spirit in business as he had in the sports world. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Preceded in death by his Father - Austin W. Hicks and Mother - Christine L. Hicks, Sister - Bobbie Lou Pierce, and Daughter- Jennifer Diane Hicks. He is survived by his Wife- Sabre A. Hicks, Sons- Gene A. Hicks Jr. and Shaun A. Hicks (Kelley), and brother James E. Hicks, three grandsons, three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers: Randy Pierce, Terry Pierce, Jimbo Hicks, John Hicks, Jason Hicks, Jerry Atkins, Robbie Atkins, Joshua Atkins, Brandon Boddie, Jeffery Boddie, Jr., Lee Johnston and Michael McLaney. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 10:00 AM from the Chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 8:30 AM. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be offered at www.mobilefuneralservice.com.
