5661 Private F Barnes, 2nd Battalion the Devonshire Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Manilla about 20 Oct 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 15 Nov 1899. They were at once sent to Durban, and, along with the 2nd Queen's, 2nd West Yorkshire, and 2nd East Surrey, formed the 2nd Brigade under Major General Hildyard. They were part of the Ladysmith relief force. Pte Barnes fought at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899. He also fought between 16-24 Jan 1900 at Venter's Spruit and Spion Kop but was not heavily engaged, and at Vaal Krantz between 5-7 Feb 1900. He was killed in action at Wynne Hill during the battle of Tugela Heights 14-27 Feb 1900, the battle leading to the breakthrough to Ladysmith. He is also commemorated on the Devonshire Boer War memorial in the North Transept of Exeter Cathedral, 1 The Cloisters, Exeter, Devon, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/25220).
