5506 Private H Austin, 2nd Battalion the East Surrey Regiment. He deployed to South Africa with his battalion for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Lismore Castle and Harlech Castle about 19 Oct 1899, and arrived in Durban about 14 Nov 1899. Along with the 2nd Queen's, 2nd Devon, and 2nd West Yorkshire, they formed the 2nd Brigade under Major General H Hildyard, part of the Ladysmith relief force (Natal Field Force). They fought at Willow Grange on 22 Nov 1899, at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899. In the second attempt to break through to Ladysmith between 16-23 Jan 1900, after crossing the Tugela River at Venter's Spruit, Pte Austin was killed in action at Bastion Hill (Intabamnyama).
