Richard's grandson, John Eagles Alcott tape recorded the following: "Richard Alcott, born in Scotland, was a drummer boy in a Scottish Highland Regiment. When he finished his enlistment, following the custom of the British army, he was discharged at some convenient place as far away from home as possible so that he would colonize. They dropped him off in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His trade was that of a soldier and he knew of a war starting up in America, the Civil War, so he came down to Boston, enlisted and served throughout the war."
