5811 Private A Alexander, 2nd Battalion the East Surrey Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Lismore Castle and Harlech Castle about 19 Oct 1899, and arrived in Durban about 14 Nov 1899. Along with the 2nd Queen's, 2nd Devon, and 2nd West Yorkshire, they formed the 2nd Brigade under Major General H Hildyard, part of the Ladysmith relief force (Natal Field Force). They fought at Willow Grange on 22 Nov 1899, at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899, at Venter's Spruit on 21 Jan 1900, at Vaal Krantz on 7 Feb 1900 and in the battle of Tugela Heights 14-27 Feb 1900, the battle leading to the breakthrough to Ladysmith. Private Alexander died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 14 Stationary Hospital, Fort Napier, Pietermaritzburg, Natal. He was buried in Fort Napier Cemetery.
