Nelsis Montengro Garay
September 17, 1938 ~ January 16, 2021

Nelsis Garay, 82, of Keene, Texas passed away from complications related to covid on January 16, 2021. She was born in Bugaba, in the province of Chiriquí, Panama, the first daughter of José Dolores Montenegro and Benigna Muñoz de Montenegro.

She was one of 8 siblings in a family that shared a deep faith in God. As the oldest girl, she helped care for her younger siblings and then she would go to help care for her nieces and nephews. She attended Adventist schools in the region before moving to Panama City as a young man.

She was a positive and sweet presence with a calm demeanor and a great sense of humor. Nelsis was an amazing cook whose recipes for Panamanian dishes like arroz con pollo, salmon and tamales were not written down, but in her memory. She loved sweets and carbohydrates, reading and listening to hymns. During the pandemic, she spent his time doing crosswords, word games and coloring books for the coloring adults. As a mother and grandmother, Nelsis was a caregiver, advocate and an endless source of support. She taught her children to be self-reliant and independent and emphasized the importance of education. Even though they are all adults, she always made sure they had dress shoes, a smart suit or warm pajamas.

Nelsis worked at the Bella Vista Theater, where she met a taxi driver and communications equipment student named Guillermo Garay. They were married on November 27, 1966 and adopted. She stayed home full time after the birth of her first daughters.

She instilled in his children faith in God; When they were younger, she prayed with them before bed, read the Bible with them and discussed the meaning of the verses and packed a lunch box full of snacks to take her children to church.

In 1984 the family emigrated to the United States in search of stability and a good education for their children. For years she worked as a nanny and caregiver for the elderly and worked in a Fort Worth hotel before retiring in 2002. She was a member of the Alvarado Seventh-day Adventist Hispanic Church where she previously served as a deaconess and a Sabbath school teacher for children.

Being a grandmother was a role she enjoyed. Mommy, as her grandchildren called her, cooked eggs the way they wanted, stayed up late at night to sing to them until they fell asleep and played basketball. Although divorced, she and Guillermo remained close friends and together they were involved grandparents.

Funeral service will be conducted January 25, 2021. Interment will follow in the Keene Memorial Park in Keene, Texas...RosserFH
