This particular sexton's unique penmanship and creative spelling make many of his burial entries difficult to decipher, but this one is exceptionally perplexing. The first letter is an "H" (there are examples of his using a lower case "h" in place of a capital one). The last letter is "p." It's difficult to say how many letters are in between because what looks like a "u" in the second position could be instead "e e," (or even " i e" or "e i," because he often doesn't dot his "i"s). After that appears to be an "r" in his unique style, then next could be one letter "u" or "n," but again could be two letters, like "s" and "i." Then, what looks like an "e," before the terminal "p" I previously mentioned. It's opaque enough that I hesitate to even make a guess. I can't find a match for this on Daniel Olds' index of Muscogee County deaths, 1890 --1918. I checked all of the "H" entries, as well as all of the "K" entries (in case the first letter is one of ODOM's "K"s that is not fully articulated). The local newspapers are only available to me through the end of 1890, so I currently can't consult that as a possible source.

Burial entry in sexton's ledger book shows: Mrs. Mary H______p [?] was born in Georgia, died aged 50 years of consumption [= tuberculosis=], and was buried 22 JUL 1891 in Section C, Lot 301, as a resident of Columbus, Georgia (so probably died there). The sexton was Abraham ODOM.

This grave is evidently not identifiably marked. City 1-301 and 1-302 were owned by J. W. BARNETT (date and price of purchase not reported on list of lot owners). Persons reported to be in C-302 include: William BARNETT (1846-1847); John S. BARNETT, buried 19 JUN 1854 (aged 3 years), unmarked; Luella "Lula" BARNETT, buried 03 OCT 1856 (aged 3 years); Lucy Ann (PITTS) BARNETT (1828--1875); and John Nathaniel BARNETT (1818--1889). There are presently no other known burials in 1-301. The BARNETTS with marked graves are in Lot 129 of Section A in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 1, p. 88.

There are several WILLIAMS individuals who are reported to be buried in city 1-301, 1-302, or 1-303. None of them are. They all have marked graves in the two lots south of the BARNETT family lot, and their locations were simply recorded incorrectly in sexton record.
