James And Mary Cain McGovern
James and Mary were married in December 1871, and decided to come West to mine and homestead. Mary's sister, Margaret, was married to John Redfern and with their four year old daughter, Lida, lived on a farm in California Gulch. John also had several mining claims. The McGoverns stayed with the Redferns. In October, John Cain Redfern was born (October 7th), and ten days later his mother, Margaret, died. She was the second person buried in the Laurin Cemetery. Mary McGovern took her sister's newborn baby and nursed him along with her own.
