Judge W.F. Claiborne died at his home in Decaturville, Missouri, Tuesday, July 13. He was a pioneer of Camden County where he was born September 27, 1855, and here he loived eighty-two years, of which fifty years of more were spent as an active leader of the county in business and politics.
Mr. Claiborne was a leader in county politics for many years during which time he served as county clerk, collector, and Presiding Judge of the County Court. He was a leader of the Democratic Party for years in this county and was successful in winning election to office while other candidates elected were Republicans. His reputation as an honest official who was always interested in the welfare of the county made many friends for him in both parties.
As a business leader, he became the county's foremost land owner and stock man. He was one of the original organizers of the First National Bank of Linn Creek and was president of the bank for several years, a position he held at the time of his death.
"Uncle Billy", as he was called by hundreds of his admirers during the last few years of his life, was not wholly occupied with business and politics, for he took time to be a part of the community in developing civic organizations and promoting the community in general. He was a member of the M.E. Church south of Decaturville, M.W.A., I.O.F. and Masonic Lodges.
He was married to Sarah Sharp November 30, 1882 and survived by his widow, Sarah Claiborne of Decaturville; seven children: Allyn, Eva, Homer, and Edith of Decaturville, Mrs. O. Esther, Linn Creek, Mrs. H.O. Collier, Laramie, Wyoming, Miss Estella Claiborne of St. Louis; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church at Decaturville at two o'clock Thursday afternoon, July 15, with the Rev. Jesse Brown of Richland in chargel His body lay in state at the church from ten o'clock Thursday morning until the funeral service to allow the numerous friends and neighbors to pay their last respects.
