With thanks to cousin Jennie Sherrill for allowing me to maintain this listing.

Fleet Cox was born circa 1778 in Lincoln County and died sometime after 1850 in Gaston County. Please note that these dates are from the 1850 Federal Census: there are no dates present or associated with the graves themselves.

He married Rachel Phillips (b abt 1782 Lincoln Co, NC - d bef 1840 Lincoln Co, NC) on the 28 Oct 1805 Lincoln Co, NC. Rachel was the daughter of David Phillips of Lincoln County. Latest research suggests that her mother was Mary Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thomas who lived just across the Catawba River in Mecklenburg County.

This graveyard is in Mt Holly, Gaston County in the Riverbend Steam Plant area. It is in the StoneWater subdivision on Woodwinds Dr. next to the road and a walking trail. These graves were originally located at the base of what was once Mountain Island. The island is now mostly submerged on the southwest side of the Highway 16 bridge. Prior to the Mountain Island Dam being built in 1924, the graves were moved up the hill by Edward David Cox and brothers, great-great-grandsons of Fleet and Rachel. To Duke Power's credit, they fenced in and landscaped this graveyard, which is now on the company's power line right-of-way. (This information from Edward Leroy Cox, Gaston County Heritage Vol 1 2002.)

Parents:

George Cox Jr (b Feb 1749 Northumberland Co, VA - d bef 24 Dec 1818 Mecklenburg Co).
Mother is unknown, but she is either Elizabeth (last name unknown), George's first wife, or Eleanor (b abt 1750 - d abt 1822 Mecklenburg Co, NC), his second wife, thought to be Eleanor Lamkin, George's first cousin.

The below is a list of those who are thought to be Fleet and Rachel's children (all born Lincoln Co, NC):

Elizabeth "Betsy" (b 1806 - d aft 1880 Gaston Co)
m James Andrew Dunn
William Charnock (b 1807 - d McMinn TN?)
m Sarah Spears
David Phillips (b 14 Mar 1808 - d 14 Sep 1883 Mecklenburg Co, NC)
m Martha C Dunn
Eleanor Lamkin "Ellen" (b 28 Jul 1811 - d 17 Feb 1890 Madison Co, AL)
m George A Reed
George Lamkin (b abt 1814 - d 11 Jan 1885 Mecklenburg Co, NC
m Sophia; m Priscilla Festerman
Sarah M (born abt 1819 - d 16 Oct 1848 Floyd Co, GA)
m Jethro Lawing
Jane P (b 11 Feb 1821 - d 6 Sep 1870 Mecklenburg Co, NC)
m George A Lawing

Siblings (from the Mecklenburg Co, NC Estate File of George Cox):

Presley Cox
William C Cox (d 1812 Lincoln Co)
Sarah "Sally" Cox m Joseph Wright
George (d aft Apr 1828 Lincoln Co, NC)
Vincent Cox (d 1854 Mecklenburg Co, NC)
Samuel Cox
John Cox (d 16 Jun 1825 Mecklenburg Co, NC)
Eleanor Cox m John Farrar
James Cox (b abt 1800)

(Note to researchers: Fleet Cox is listed in the 1850 Federal Census, residing in Floyd County, Georgia. In the next household were living his daughter Jane and son-in-law George A Lawing. George and Jane came back to North Carolina prior to 1860, as did Fleet.
The Rachel Cox listed in the 1850 Federal Census for Mecklenburg County, NC, with daughter Cynthia and son James, is not Rachel Phillips, the wife of Fleet. This is Rachel Jamison who married James Cox in Mecklenburg 11 May 1811. I do not know this James Cox's ancestry, but I feel strongly that he was part of our George Cox family group, possibly the son of William C Cox [see above] who died in 1812.)
