Helen Hamilton Champney, age 87, of Little Rock, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 18, 2007. Helen was born November 4, 1919, in South Tunnel, a small village in middle Tennessee, the youngest and last surviving of ten children born to David Morgan and Ella Florence Hamilton. Helen's father was a pioneer evangelist for the Church of Christ, holding meetings in Tennessee, Texas and surrounding states.

Helen grew up on the family farm and, after graduating from Gallatin High school, went to work in Chicago, where she lived with her sister. She attended one of the oldest Churches of Christ in Chicago, Cornell Avenue, where she met her husband of 67 years, Everett Champney, who preceded her in death last year.

She married Everett Champney on August 29, 1939 in Nashville, Tennessee. The couple immediately relocated to Chicago, where the Lord blessed their marriage with two beautiful daughters, Greta Gayle Fugit Wornock and Kathy Elleen Champney. An elder's wife for 28 years, Helen taught Bible classes for nearly every age from kindergarten through high school and then, in later years, ladies classes.

In 1978, Everett and Helen retired to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she was head of the Women's Department at Mountainside Church of Christ, until poor health forced her retirement.

In 2000, Everett and Helen moved to Pleasant Hills Retirement Community in Little Rock, Arkansas. Helen spoke at Pleasant Valley Church of Christ Women's Meetings, led a small weekly Bible study and spoke occasionally for Sunset Fellowship at Pleasant Hills Retirement Community.

Helen is survived by her two daughters: Greta Gayle Fugit Wornock and her husband, Buddy, of Little Rock; and Kathy Elleen Champney of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandson, Stephen Anyanonu and his wife Leslie and their children, Benjamin Everett and Jordan Dennis; granddaughter, Janelle Anyanonu; and a large Wornock step-family; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 22, 2007 at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home Chapel (501)224-8300 with Mr. Nick Hamilton of Little Rock and Mr. Alan Taylor of Albuquerque officiating. Interment will be at Riverwood Memorial Gardens in Maumelle.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to River City Ministries at Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, 10900 North Rodney Parham, Little Rock, Arkansas 72212.
